Ladies and gentlemen, permit me to engage you in a confrontation of a social anomaly which has been eating our society to the core. In every day setting, the media outlets are constantly bombarding the woman’s self-image in every way possible. It is a matter which should concern everyone, especially when the most probable issue, in this case, is the perpetuation of Eurocentric beauty standards in the media. Therefore,it is my humble plea to allow me to take you through the journey of how we and the media can change the perception of the perfect body as portrayed by the beauty and fashion industries and in films and television shows.
The situation is dire and it needs to be rectified lest we lose a huge number of men and women who have been brainwashed about their beauty and handsomeness. In this case, one of the ways in which we can change this perception by the media is to encourage people out there to use their creative minds and view all that media bombards to them with skepticism. It should be understood by everyone that all the media images and messages are constructions and they do not reflect reality. We should develop the ability to filter what will protect out body image, and self-esteem by simply being who we are.
It should be our responsibility to help ourselves; this is by helping and facilitating means of promoting healthy body images in the media. We can confront the issue by writing back to the advertiser on an ad which is bound to make us hate our own self, make us feel bad about our own bodies. In this case, we can identify advertisers who are sending positive messages about the diversity of human bodies and those who recognize and celebrate them. Writing letters of protests to advertisers and beauty agencies on the displeasure of the society .
To conclude, we should not let society suffer because we have allowed a culture which narrows down the notions of what beauty is, and what is to be male or female. Its time to prove that these are not just sayings, of that beauty in looks does not matter, and beauty is skin deep. Thank you.
