Class Consciousness
The article Class Consciousness by Lucas George delves into the matter of the Marxist understanding of the fact that the division of the society is based on the position of the means of production. The concept which is at the developed by the article is the conflict between the proletariat, the bourgeoise, and the ruling class. The dynamics into the survival of these classes of the society is what brings about the dynamics of the control of the means of production and the subjugation of the workers. The concept of class consciousness as viewed by Marx is that the capitalism has made the poor grow poorer and the rich grow rich. On the aspect of false consciousness, is that the workers do not view themselves as one unit rather that it is an individual matter. The idea which is amplified by the author is the ideal which was held by Marx on that capitalism was a means to the objectification of the human society as a necessity for human development.
The content of the article and the conflict theory share a common connection in that they both agree that conflicts are brought about in the difference in the social class and the efforts made to try and struggle for change. The ideals of conflict theory are in such a manner that the relations between class consciousness and false consciousness where the spirit of man being hostile to social institutions. In this case, they both support that there are two major classes which bring about the conflicts (Busch, 2005). Despite the fact, the article deals with workers and employers while the theory deals with minority and the majority class, but at the end, they are connected. Both cases people struggle to achieve what they term as better for them. The idea in both cases is to enable each group to learn to develop the togetherness so as they can achieve.
The article is fascinating because it enables one to have the knowledge of how to avoid exploitation and how people are supposed to come together and become to fight for what they need. The article delves into the matter of inequality and groups by determining the ones which are oppressed and those which are advantaged. It also gives a clear understanding of what a social class is and its determining principle in social life. I cannot agree more with the author that false consciousness reflects the perspective of people of certain social standing who do not agree with the position held by that social class.
