Contemporary and Alternative Medicine; models of health and healing

'The biomedical Model focuses on the biological and the physical aspects of the illness and disease. It is a practice which is associated with health professionals and doctors which are regarded as diagnosis, cure and treatment if illnesses (Baretich, 2010). The biopsychosocial model of the part is named aptly regarding its their main components. The ideologies involved are biological, psychological and social aspects. '

A. Professional presence

There are several models of health and healing which are used by medical practitioners to provide cure and healing to patients. However, these models have differences in their concepts and how they are practiced. Among the many of them, there are a biomedical model and the biopsychosocial model which are used in the medical practice. The biomedical Model focuses on the biological and the physical aspects of the illness and disease. It is a practice which is associated with health professionals and doctors which are regarded diagnosis, cure and treatment if illnesses (Baretich, 2010). The biopsychosocial model of the part is named aptly regarding its their main components. The ideologies involved are biological, psychological and social aspects. In this aspect, the practicing of health is thereby related in-between the three concepts of health.

The mode of practice is unique in the two models in that the biomedical model is based on the auspices that all sicknesses can be explained through cellular abnormality (Baretich, 2010). The framework views health as a situation where there is a complete absence of a defect, pain, and disease. The perspective of the biomedical represents the time of the establishment of the model. This is in the fact that it there was the posits that the largest danger to health life was the cause of viral and bacterial ailments. The biopsychosocial model encompasses a wide variety of processes which are involved in the human body. It also includes a wider variety of psychological aspects coupled with elements of the society such as economic and cultural background (Zittel, Lawrence & Wodarski, 2002).

The treatment in the biomedical model is that is used to remove all illnesses using empirical analysis of the pathology of the disease. This is then followed by narrowing down by the possible causes of the ailment and the possible ways of initiating recovery (Baretich, 2010). Also, the medical practitioner must also determine how the action which is the best will be administered. The biomedical model seeks to find a solution which befits a particular problem.

The biopsychosocial model, there is an increased attention to the patient’s thoughts, behaviors, and emotions which make them the basics of primary care and treatment. It denotes that there is an invariable relation between biology, psychology, and society. The biological factors would include biochemical and genetics of the body, psychological factors such as the behavior, personality, and moods (Zittel, Lawrence & Wodarski, 2002). The socio factors, in this case, would include socioeconomic, medical, cultural and family. It posits that the workings of the body are in such a manner that the body can be affected by the mind, and the working s of the mind can be affected by the body. This then indicates that there are direct interactions between the body and the mind and the fact that both can be affected by intermediate external factors.

The model presumes that it is essential to handle the three aspects together in that the perception of the patient regarding their health and the threats of diseases should be considered. In this aspect, the hindrances of the patients cultural or social environment are considered because they influence the way a patient engages aspects in treatment behaviors and promoting health (Zittel, Lawrence & Wodarski, 2002). These include aspects such as taking of medication, proper nutrition, and diet and doing physical activity. With such influences which are diverse, the biopsychosocial model promotes the idea of the connection, and it highlights the relationship between the mental and physical process which in the case of sickness, recovery and overall health (Zittel, Lawrence & Wodarski, 2002). It can, therefore, be determined that biomedical model and the biopsychosocial model counter each other in their philosophy, practice and their overall concept of human health.

B. Keirsey temperament personality test.

Having an artisan temperament personality is one of the surprising aspects of my personality. It resonates well with my creativity attitude in that I have the attitude in that I have an instinct of using and manipulating tools to my advantage. I can practically use tools. I have a nack for manipulating tools in that when a job needs to be done. I will apply the tool for whatever reason for the job to be done. Creativity is something I always get complements for, in the perception and the ability to fashion things to serve for another purpose rather than the original.

Being an artisan means that I do not plan for my day, I live the day as it unfolds and tries as much as possible to live the present moment to its full capacity. I go about every day with the mindset that I must survive the day, and constantly scanning the environment for newer opportunities. I prefer to see what turn up for the day, with the confidence in my abilities that I will handle any situation which comes in my way. One of the attitudes have discovered upon my self is the ability to act on impulse, in that I trust my instincts more than the evidence which can present itself before me. However, it is not that I am irresponsible, but I have the impulse of doing things like just now and have it done. I usually know have the attitude that if something should be done, it should be now and not later. This having the nudging attitude of solving a problem in a practical way such as repairing a leaking water pipe, fixing the car or mowing the lawns.

Sometimes I have the feeling that I am not gaining enough by being in school. Not that I consider the school as a waste of time and energy, but it is the conviction that the world out there is offering opportunities which should be tapped and be conquered. I am not fancied by reading a book to learn something, but the ability to learn things more practically. I prefer courses and subjects which are hands on and do not involve more about theories. That is why I prefer engineering and fine arts courses. Probably it could be the reason I consider myself an inborn actor and I excel in athletics.

Regarding the relationship with others, I usually have got bored and restless on routine and things which demand repetition. As my own undoing, I become very restless and bored when I sit in lectures in class for an along time and sometimes to compensate this lost time; I get mischievous with other students. I am usually intrigued by action, and a class which lacks action is very tedious and boring. Many are times I consider myself hyper active, having this hands-on attitude which is one of the ways which can calm me down and be able to learn. This is coupled with teachers who are playful and active in class and how the content is delivered. I consider it as fun doing things which demand action, such as practicing kicking a ball or hitting baseball fliers. This is not that it is repetitive, but rather it is fun to do so.

There are several challenges which can come about with the functionality of the artisan personality in the presence of other personalities. One of them is how the artisans can turn to stress as a defensive mechanism in especially when things are not going their way. This is especially in the fact that there can be a conflict with the rational personality in the aspect of artisans being in denial despite the overwhelming evidence they have (Dyussenbayev, 2017). In this case, if an activity is stalled, there is high likely hood that they deny the facts of the matter. Stress management is usually being a problem about others in that they can become restless, or retaliate against the stress’ source. This kind of interaction can prove to be very costly and demand artisans as it can taint the relationship between others and people close to them (Segal, 2001).

The other issue with artisans is on the aspect of decisions making especially with the rationales which are in the sense that most of the artisans would deny the fact before them. This is because they lack the ability to step back and think things over and have considerations of the issues which are part of the activity. Their spontaneity in doing actions can sometimes be their own undoing in carrying out activities. Engaging an activity with a rational would result in a disaster since one would want to have several steps taken and work done in a certain order (Segal, 2001). An artisan, on the other hand, would want to have things done in right away, devoid of bureaucratic bottle necks and definitive procedures. Making of decisions for the artisans would be on impulse, which can at times lead to irresponsibility and recklessness. A rational person acts and thinks later, and due to his or her desire to reap praise and recognition for what has been achieved, it results in irrational decisions in an attempt to win favor and praise (Dyussenbayev, 2017).

C. Mindfulness practice

There are several aspects of the human body which are wired to help us survive grueling times and times of immense fright and pain. Mindfulness is one of those aspects which would facilitate anyone to have the attitude and the ability to be self-aware and control the situations which one is in. This is primarily because the body and the mind are intertwined, and they provide the body with a balance of the emotional and hormonal imbalance which necessitate healthy living. Therefore, an individual can set goals which each of the four domains of the mind and the body to achieve a balance between them.

For the physical body, there are several goals which can be set based on the mindfulness practice plan. One of them of them is the reduction of suffering. This is in the aspect that when the body might be in a physical anguish, mindfulness will assist in lessening the amount of anguish as assumed by the mind and the nervous system. This is the ability to be in control of the body rather than letting mind and the nervous system control the body. The other goal is to boost the immune system which will enable the body to fight diseases.

The other aspect of the human body is that od rhythms and vitals. The goals for these rhythms is to reduce stress levels by having what one does be in definitive order which can be ascertained by the person who is in the proactive mindfulness plan. The other goal is to increase productivity in the utilization of the time, and energy one must have the optimum levels. Productivity will be a byproduct of a well definitive and rhythmic life.

The other aspect is the mental and emotional mindfulness. The goals for this aspect would include knowing and understanding oneself at a deeper level. This is the aspect of being aware of the functionality of one body and mind away from the normal naked eyes. Self-awareness will increase the ability to determine the extent of one’s ability and energies based on the self-evaluation. The other goal is a behavioral change in that the human body and body is in control of situations and life. Behavioral change is the aspect of abandoning practices which harm the body and others and engaging in actions and activities which bring life and self-awareness to others in the society.

The other aspect is the biographical spiritual body mindfulness. The goals for this aspect will be the development and nurture of a spirit of a loving service. This is the development of the ability to show love, care, and concern not only to others and oneself. This will necessitate the ability of one to interact with the outside world and bring love and concern for others. The other goal is the achievement of greater fulfilment in life. Having the spirit of peace will result in one having tranquility and fulfilment to one’s soul and create an awareness of one’s beliefs and convictions.

There are several ways in which these goals can be achieved. The reduction of suffering to the body can be achieved through being mindful of the moment by moment experience the body is undergoing though. In this aspect, it is therefore easy for the one to control the level of suffering and anguish as it is dictated by the nervous system. Taking control of pain and anguish is one way of limiting it feeling form consuming one up (Nestler, Sierra, Jay & David, 2015). One must adapt become more aware of the situation he or she is in. Being able to relax, will reduce the stress levels which the mind is going through. Therefore, if high levels of stress are left to go on untamed, it will result in the immune system shutting down temporarily. Therefore, relaxation will boost the immune system and one must make it regular by doing individual body scans more often (Nestler, Sierra, Jay & David, 2015).

Reduction of stress levels can be achieved by the following a daily routine of for example in hale and exhale. This can be programmed rhythmically in that one can have an inhale during breakfast which will induce the reduction of the pressure on the brain. This can be repeated during a hike, which would be an exhale, or washing dishes be an inhale and preparing meals to exhale (Shonin & Van Gordon, 2014). This would bring harmony and open the pressure valve in one’s mind. This would mean that one be conscious of the times when there is tension or pressure build up in mind and act accordingly. The increase in productivity would be achieved in having a having aware ness during each daily routine which would would result in greater mindfulness and increased productivity. A weekly and seasonal routine can be initiated to ensure that there is a definitive pattern of how things are done and energies spent (Shonin & Van Gordon, 2014). This will diminish chances of undone or delayed activities resulting to pressure and subsequent stress.

Knowing oneself at a deeper level would be achieved through mediation. Mediation is one of how one can get in touch with the inner self and listen to the signals and the subtle signs which the body is sending to the mind. This is in the aspect of creating a harmonious relationship between oneself and the inner self. Mediation will inevitably sharpen one inner concentration leading to understating of oneself, the ability to control negative emotions and how to cool oneself when tempers flare (Shonin & Van Gordon, 2014). Behavioral change can be achieved by changing routines and habits which lead to unfulfilling health activities. For example, abandoning binge drinking by controlling the amount of alcohol one takes at any time, or substituting the care for a bicycle on one’s way to work. Behavioral change will be the ultimate course of achieving a successful mindfulness practice plan. Doing away with activities which harm the body will result in having a fulfilling life which is healthy for the mind and the body (Blaser, 2017).

Nurturing the spirit of a loving service would be in the adoption of the attitude of repeatedly wishing and bidding people good tidings and prosperity. For example, one can have the message of “all beings living to deserve to be happy” which is the ability to have the mind change its mindset to that of a caring person. Also, one can induce the phrase of “don’t do unto others which you don’t want to be done unto you.” This will inevitably cause those who are around to bask in the love in which one is manifesting (Nestler, Sierra, Jay & David, 2015). The other goals are the achievement of fulfilment in life which can be achieved through exercising, eating healthy and engaging in positive activities. These are situations which would make the mind to engage the body on what is communicating, which would result in feeling great in the body. This will make one have the sense of peace in one’s mind which would subsequently turn happy memories and trigger happiness. This is because everything would have come into perfect alignment that is the mind, body, and spirit (Blaser, 2017).

D. Healing environments

For there to be an increase in the healing capacity of patients, there has to be that conducive environment to encourage the attainment of full healing. Optimal healing environment can be termed as the healthcare systems that have been well designed to meet that healing that is desired (Edwards, 2011). The internal environment is said to consist of personal thoughts, expectations, and hopes. For healing to be initiated, it has to come from within, and this shows it matters a lot for one to drive themselves to personal healing since it can play a big role in one’s healing. The internal environment consists of the spirit the body and mind in connection. Patients get to communicate their feelings believes and hopes (Kreitzer,2013). Hence for healing to be achieved care must be given to improving health status.

Patientscome for health care services with a lot of hope and expectation. This beliefs and expectation are what a doctor should use to try and manage the healing process (Kim, 2010). A person’s wholeness is the suitability of the spirit body and mind.is usually experienced by forming a relationship with self and others and therefore leading to healing.

The interpersonal environment is associated with all kind of relationships in different levels. A healing relationship is well known to be a foundation for healing to occur. The relationship between a healer and a patient should be considered so as the healing to be achieved (Kim,2010). A healing relationship requires a lot of communication, management of emotions and attention to achieve the targeted healing (Kreitzer,2013). Healing relationship does not necessarily take place in health centers. Kurosu (2012) argues that getting support socially is also vital to attaining healing when individuals get support from family members or even marriage partners facilitates better healing and decreased death rate. When there is the formation of the better relationship, the patient can open up to the doctor and hence be able to understand their reaction toward their morals in this regard what will be awaited is better healing (Edwards, 2011). For all this to be achieved trust is required as the basis which is achieved over time.

The behavioral environment consists of what we engage ourselves in so as to create and promote health may be for people surrounding us or us. A positive behavioral environment should encourage the practice of a healthy environment. When we engage in healthy behaviors, we can prevent or even cure certain diseases. What you do in your day to day activity for instance how you can manage stress, the amount of food you take the activities you engage in have a lot of impact on our health and ability to heal or recover (Kim, 2010).

The external environment consists of all that surrounds us that is the physical environment where our lives rotate. Our physical environment can be a negative or positive influence on our healing. We should all work to achieve that physical environment that will create a positive impact on our healing. By positively using the resources around us we can successfully achieve this needed environment that is appropriate for the body mind and spirit (Kreitzer,2013). Space may be referred as being a healing space if it has certain qualities that meet the comfort that one requires to achieve. According to Lineburg, (2012) correlating the environment and healing reduces one’s psychological problems hence making one free of stress which improves one’s road to healing.

Supposing I should create an awareness in my health care setting concerning what has been discussed above. Basing on what they know I would make them understand how healing relates to the internal environment (Edwards, 2011). Showing them how a person’s emotions, expectation, and thoughts can control one’s healing. Since if all this are negative nothing can be achieved regarding health since it pulls one down and decreases their determination to heal. Hence making the health practitioners understand that they should understand one’s emotions so as to start the healing process (Kim, 2010). On interpersonal they should know that creating that relationship that is healthy is very important since it builds trust and gives the patient the ability to open up to the healer all that they are finding hard or even their fear this can play a bigger role on the road to healing. Therefore, encourage them to make that relationship that is healthy between the caregiver and the patient and ensure they are patient since at times building this trust may take a while and require some gestures that may seem more of a burden to the health care giver. But achieving this, at last, will constitute of nothing bad, good results which as always is the mission of the healer. So making them understand this may be efficient to them.

According to Kreitzer, (2013) behavioral environment is another road to health that would require persuasion, so as to make them understand that what the patient does may determine their rate of recovery. Hence I would advise them to try and control what their patient engage themselves in, and they should try and influence each and everything they do so as to attain positivity in the final results (Kim, 2010). Lastly, on the external environment making them understand that a person’s surroundings can greatly influence their rate of recovery. Also, that to achieve the best the physical environment of the patient is supposed to be favorable and at most have the required comfort. So as to allow the patient to release the inner stress which in most cases is the reason behind diseases.
